4/11/2013 - Emerging Leaders in Sports Business To Be Recognized at the 5 To Watch Awards

TORONTO, ON – APRIL 11, 2013 – Canada’s leading sports business, education and marketing professionals will honour the next generation of leaders in the sports industry at the 5 To Watch Awards: A Celebration of Leadership in Canadian Sport Business on May 16, 2013. The awards have become a highly anticipated event that recognizes the 5 To Watch and are presented by George Brown College’s Sport and Event Marketing Program in partnership with The Globe and Mail.

“This event has proven to be a unique opportunity for the industry to recognize those who are excelling and setting the tone for the future success of the Canadian sports business industry," said Mike Fenton, Volunteer Co-Chair, and Executive Director, West Park Healthcare Foundation.

The award winners will be announced in front of top executives representing all facets of the sports industry. The awards – to be presented at George Brown’s Waterfront Campus in Toronto – were launched to benefit current and future students by raising funds for student bursaries in the Centre for Business at George Brown College.

“We are proud to be part of an event that celebrates the accomplishments of a next generation of industry leaders,” said Maureen Loweth, Dean, Business, Arts and Design, George Brown College. “Our hope is that our future graduates will be motivated by the success of the award recipients and that essentially we are creating another generation of mentors.”

George Brown is expected to receive a minimum of $25,000 towards student bursaries and the George Brown College Alumni Award for Business that is open to applications from students in the Sport and Event Marketing program.  Representing one of the six Founding Sponsors, Sara Moore, Vice-President, Marketing, Canadian Football League adds: “The Canadian Football League is very proud to be part of the George Brown Student Business Awards and to recognize the best and brightest.  I was personally very proud to present the CFL Achievement Award to the 2013 bursary recipient, Patricia Gauthier.”

The 5 To Watch will be voted on by a panel of leading sports marketers and influencers, including representation from Founding Partners: BMO Financial Group, Canadian Football League, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, SDI Marketing, TSN and presenting partner, The Globe and Mail.

Among the keynote speakers at the awards are:

Brian Williams, O.C.  - A highly respected broadcaster who anchored CTV’s primetime Olympic coverage of both the London 2012 Olympic Summer Games and the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, playing a leading role in shaping and delivering the network’s award-winning coverage.  He joined CTV and TSN in 2006.
